The Evolution of Finance – And Why Many Businesses Are Missing Its Greatest Value

For many business owners, finance is still viewed as a necessary function. It keeps the books balanced, pays suppliers, produces accounts and ensures taxes are filed correctly. It's an essential part of every business, but for many years that was largely where its role ended.

And for a long time, that was exactly what businesses needed.

But businesses have changed.

Markets move faster. Margins are tighter. Technology has transformed the way we operate. Decisions need to be made quickly, often with incomplete information, and leaders are expected to navigate increasing complexity while continuing to grow.

As businesses evolved, so did finance.

From Scorekeeper to Strategic Partner

Twenty or thirty years ago, the finance department was often seen as the scorekeeper. Its job was to record what had already happened.

Today, the world's most successful organisations expect far more.

Finance Business Partners, Commercial Finance Managers, Financial Controllers and FP&A teams have become integral to the way businesses operate. These roles don't exist because accounting has become more complicated. They exist because business has.

Modern finance professionals don't simply explain the numbers. They ask why those numbers exist.

Why has profitability reduced?

Why are projects overrunning?

Why is cash under pressure despite increasing sales?

Why is capital tied up in assets that no longer create value?

Why does one process consistently cost more than another?

Those questions rarely begin and end in the finance department. They usually lead into operations, sales, purchasing, engineering, production and leadership.

That's because finance has become far more than reporting.

It's become a way of understanding how a business performs.

Looking Through a Finance Lens

One phrase I often use is "looking through a finance lens."

That doesn't mean looking for accounting errors.

It means recognising that every decision made within a business leaves a financial footprint.

A poorly designed process increases cost.

An inaccurate asset register affects investment decisions.

Weak forecasting impacts cash flow.

Poor communication creates waste.

Unclear responsibilities reduce productivity.

Finance connects all of these together.

When viewed through the right lens, finance becomes less about numbers and more about understanding how the entire business works.

The Missed Opportunity

Many growing businesses continue to invest heavily in operations, sales and technology, but finance is still often viewed as a compliance function.

The irony is that modern finance doesn't compete with those departments.

It makes every one of them better.

It helps leaders understand whether investment is delivering value. It highlights where processes are creating unnecessary cost. It provides confidence when making decisions. It identifies risks before they become problems.

In other words, finance isn't there to slow a business down.

It's there to help it move forward with greater confidence.

Why This Matters to Growing Businesses

Large organisations have embraced this way of thinking for years. They employ Finance Business Partners, Commercial Controllers and FP&A specialists because they understand the value that commercial finance brings.

Many growing SMEs don't have that luxury.

Not because they don't need it.

Simply because they aren't yet large enough to justify building an in-house team.

That's where I believe businesses can unlock significant value.

Not by producing more reports.

Not by creating more spreadsheets.

But by using financial thinking to strengthen processes, improve decision-making, build better controls and create the foundations for sustainable growth.

At The Business Mill, that's exactly how I work.

Yes, reporting matters.

Yes, forecasting matters.

But they're only the beginning.

My role is to use finance as the thread that runs through the business, connecting people, processes, systems and decisions. By looking through that finance lens, opportunities often become visible that might otherwise remain hidden.

Finance has evolved.

The question is...

Has the way your business thinks about finance evolved with it?

At The Business Mill, that's the conversation we're here to start

About The Business Mill

The Business Mill™ works alongside growing businesses as an extension of their leadership team, bringing the commercial thinking and challenge typically found in much larger organisations.

We don't replace your accountant, and we don't arrive with a one-size-fits-all solution. Instead, we work through a commercial finance lens to understand how your business really operates—connecting financial performance with the people, processes and decisions that drive it.

That might mean strengthening reporting and forecasting, improving business processes and controls, reviewing operational performance, challenging investment decisions or helping leadership teams turn information into action.

Every business is different, which is why our approach always begins with understanding your business before recommending change.

Whether you need support through a focused Discovery Phase, help embedding improvements, or ongoing Finance Business Partnering, our goal remains the same:

To help you build a stronger, better-informed business by using finance as a tool for better decision-making—not simply better reporting.
